The city of Wolf Point, MT is the county seat of Roosevelt County and has a population of a little over 2,600. As the largest urban area in the Fort Peck Indian Reservation, it is a good place for visitors to use as a base for exploring the surrounding areas in the northeastern corner of Montana. If you want to check out the natural surroundings of Wolf Point, these excellent hiking trails are a good place to start.

1. Milk River Observation Point

Located in one of the tallest points of northeastern Montana, the Milk River Observation Point is an excellent place for hikers looking for a challenge. Going through some of the region’s typical landscapes, this hiking and walking trail leads to a spot offering the most spectacular views of the confluence of the Missouri River and Milk River, as well as the Milk Coulee Bay, the Fort Peck Lake, and the nearby town of Fort Peck.

Getting to the start of the trail leading to the Milk River Observation Point from downtown Wolf Point takes a little under an hour by car, driving west along route US-2. Before you set off to this trail, make sure to pack some comfortable shoes and plenty of water, as there are only a few small towns and villages along the way. Although the trail is not very long, it features a continuously changing terrain.

2. Medicine Lake National Wildlife Refuge

Spanning a total area of more than 31,000 acres just a few miles south of the Canadian border, the Medicine Lake National Wildlife Refuge is an excellent place for both amateur and expert hikers looking for a spot to get away from the city and check out some excellent views of the area. This national wildlife refuge was established in 1935 but did not gain recognition as a national natural landmark until the 1980s.

Getting to the Medicine Lake National Wildlife Refuge from the city of Wolf Point takes a little over an hour by car, driving northeast along routes US-2 E and MT-16 N. The different trails take visitors from the outskirts of the town of Medicine Lake, into the national wildlife refuge, and along a series of different ponds and artificial bodies of water connected to the main lake.

3. Hell Creek State Park

Located 143 miles away from Wolf Point, the Hell Creek State Park is a well-known natural spot for visitors from northeastern Montana and nearby cities across the Canadian border. This state park is not only a great spot for hiking but also for other outdoor activities, including boating, camping, lake fishing, ice skating, picnicking, and swimming. Getting to the entrance of the park from Wolf Point takes two and a half hours by car.
