Sitting on the banks of the Missouri River, the city of Wolf Point, MT is the largest community on the Fort Peck Indian Reservation and a place known around the state for its annual Wild Horse Stampede and other traditional festivals and events. 1. Medicine Lake National Wildlife Refuge
If there is something that comes to mind when thinking about Montana, it is its beautiful landscapes of pristine lakes, snow-capped mountains, and green prairies. Located at 223 N Shore Road and about 75 miles northeast of downtown Wolf Point, Medicine Lake Wildlife Refuge is a fantastic place for a day trip from Wolf Point and a photogenic local landmark that can be reached in about one hour and 20 minutes by car via routes US-2 and MT-16.
Managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Medicine Lake Wildlife Refuge encompasses an area of more than 30,000 acres and provides habitat to hundreds of species of birds and mammals. A popular destination among birdwatchers and photographers, this wildlife refuge also offers great opportunities for hiking, picnicking, hunting, and fishing.
2. Fort Peck Interpretive Center
The official visitor center for the Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge, Fort Peck Interpretive Center is a fantastic place to visit for Wolf Point locals wanting to learn more about the flora and fauna of the region, go on nature hikes, or take part in interactive activities organized by local volunteers. This interpretive center is located at Yellowstone Road in the town of Fort Peck and can be reached in about 45 minutes by car from downtown Wolf Point.
Once you make your way to Fort Peck Interpretive Center, you will be amazed by the large dinosaur replicas, as well as the exhibits showcasing the history of the nearby Fort Peck Dam. This interpretive center is open Monday through Friday and offers guided tours led by local experts who can tell you all about the nature and history of the area.
3. Wolf Point Area Museum
First established in the early 1970s, the Wolf Point Area Museum features a series of exhibitions showcasing artefacts and belongings of the first European settlers who arrived in the region throughout the 19th Century. Located at 203 US Highway 2 and right in the heart of the Wolf Point city center, this place is a great spot to learn more about the town’s history and heritage. Opening hours are Monday through Friday between 9:00 am and 5:00 pm.
