Known as the birthplace of the oldest rodeo in the state, Wolf Point, MT, is the largest community on the Fort Peck Indian Reservation and a great base to explore the beautiful wilderness that this region has to offer. If you are thinking of taking your family on a scenic drive in your 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee, here are three fantastic weekend getaways you should check out.
1. Medicine Lake National Wildlife Refuge
Covering approximately 31,500 acres and established in 1935 to provide an undisturbed habitat for various species of migratory birds and local wildlife, Medicine Lake National Wildlife Refuge is a fantastic destination for a road trip and a great place to spend a weekend enjoying your favorite outdoor activities with your loved ones. Managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, this place is home to nearly 300 different species of birds.
Medicine Lake National Wildlife Refuge is located about 75 miles northeast of Wolf Point, making it possible to reach it in about one hour and 20 minutes by car via U.S. Route 2 and MT-16. Some of the activities visitors can enjoy at this wildlife refuge include selective hunting, fishing, and boating. Although camping is not allowed within the refuge, campgrounds and other accommodation facilities can be found nearby.
2. Makoshika State Park
Located about 100 miles southeast of Wolf Point, Makoshika State Park encompasses more than 11,500 acres and is the largest state park in the state of Montana. Featuring impressive badland formations and one of the largest collections of dinosaur fossils in the region, this public recreation area is an excellent spot to spend the weekend.
Driving from Wolf Point to Makoshika State Park takes approximately one hour and 40 minutes via routes MT-13 and MT-200. Some of the most popular activities include wildlife watching, picnicking, mountain biking, hunting, hiking, and birdwatching. A large campground with modern facilities is available throughout the year for those wanting to stay more than a day and explore the many areas of this fantastic nature reserve.
3. Grasslands National Park
Sitting across the Canadian border in Saskatchewan, Grasslands National Park is one of the most beautiful and undisturbed nature reserves in the region. Established in the early 1980s, this national park is home to a large population of plains bison, offering great opportunities for wildlife watching. Several campgrounds and cozy cabins are available for those staying overnight. Driving here from Wolf Point takes about three hours and 30 minutes.
