Beautiful Wolf Point, MT, the largest community on the Fort Peck Indian Reservation, is rich in history and culture. Take the opportunity to visit one–or all!–of the best museums the area has to offer for a deep dive into the artifacts and stories of our land and people and some fun along the way.

1. Wolf Point Area Museum

Located at 203 US Highway 2, the Wolf Point Museum features antiques, heirlooms, and artifacts of early settler and homesteader life alongside artifacts of local Native American culture. Here you can see the cash register from Wolf Point’s first drugstore, and oak dresser from the first boardinghouse in Wolf Point, and a excellent collection of arrowheads and paintings by local artists. We’re open seasonally, so please check our schedule before you swing by for a visit.

2. Poplar Museum

Housed in the old tribal jail built around 1920, which is now on the National Register of Historic Places, this museum offers an interesting collection in a fascinating setting. Native American and frontier collections are displayed right inside the old jail cells. Located on US Highway 2, you’ll find an emphasis on the beadwork and quiltwork of the Sioux-Assiniboine people. Try to spot the initials of some prisoners scrached right into the bricks on the east wall!

3. Fort Peck Dam Interpretive Center and Museum

Your Jeep Grand Cherokee offers a comfortable and fun ride to this museum, located in Fort Peck, just a short drive away from Wolf Point proper at 157 Yellowstone Rd. You’ll be greeted by Peck’s Rex, a life-size Tyrannosaurus Rex discovered in this area in 1997. Also fascinating are the two largest aquariums in Montana, both found here, featuring the fish of Fort Peck Lake and the Montana River. Interpretive programs and children’s activities round out the fun.
