1. Fort Peck Lake

Formed after the construction of the Fort Peck Dam across the Missouri River, Fort Peck Lake is an artificial reservoir covering a surface area of about 245,000 acres across six different counties. This body of water was originally established to enhance navigation on the Missouri River, as well as to provide water for the nearby urban areas. Considered the fifth largest artificial lake in the United States, it has also become a popular tourist attraction.

The designated fishing areas at Fort Peck Lake are located mostly along its northern shores, which can be reached in about 45 minutes by car from downtown Wolf Point, driving along route US-2. Once here, some of the most popular fish species are lake trout, chinook salmon, sauger, walleye, lake trout, northern pike, and small bass. Besides fishing, Fort Peck Lake also offers plenty of opportunities for hiking, biking, camping, birdwatching, and other recreational activities.

2. Medicine Lake

Covering a surface area of a little under 9,000 acres, Medicine Lake is a popular recreational and fishing destination in the area. Home to healthy populations of northern pike, brook trout, and rainbow trout, this body of water can be accessed through Medicine Lake National Wildlife Refuge, a nature reserve created in 1935 and managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Located about 80 miles northeast of downtown North Point, Medicine Lake can be reached in an hour and 20 minutes by car, driving along routes US-2 and MT-16. This place is not only a popular spot among anglers, as it offers plenty of opportunities for other outdoor activities including birdwatching and wildlife photography. Whether you are looking for a spot to test your fishing skills or simply enjoy some time away from the city, it is a great day trip destination.

3. Hell Creek State Park

Providing facilities for a vast array of water sports, Hell Creek State Park is a public recreation area encompassing over 300 acres of territory along the southern banks of the Missouri River. With healthy populations of walleye, northern pike, and smallmouth bass, this state park attracts thousands of visitors each year since it first opened its doors to the public in 1966.
